![]() ![]() As with past Tales of games, enemy encounters in Tales of Xillia happen in real time. You get to choose whose side of the story you want to see, complete with unique cutscenes and events complementing each campaign.įortunately, both heroes give you access to the thrilling new battle system powering combat in Tales of Xillia. On the other side you have Milla Maxwell, a mysterious woman who travels with four spirits and will stop at nothing to accomplish her mission. On one side we have Jude Mathis, a bright medical student attending the university in the capital city of Fennmont. Not only that, but Tales of Xillia also has two main protagonists. I felt like I could dabble in other characters, but it puts a lot of pressure on you to play him compared to other Tales games and their mains, and part of the appeal of the franchise is 'maining' a party member of my choice.Hello PlayStation.Blog readers! I have great news to tell you all: Tales of Xillia is now available exclusively for PS3 in North America, both at retail and digitally on PlayStation Store.ĭo you like adventure, over-worlds, mana, warring nations, great spirits, lesser spirits, upgradable shops, real-time battles, lovable characters, and huge bosses? Tales of Xillia has all those things, and more! Do you start to involuntarily shake with giddiness at the mere mention of a wyvern? Buddy, you better sit down, because we’ve got MULTIPLE WYVERNS! Speaking personally, the straw that broke the camel's back for me was how badly it wants you to use Ludger. Its narrative is, at the very least, a deeply entertaining kind of trainwreck. It's not bad, just kind of lazy (it recycles a ton of assets and Xillia already copy-pasted bland environments) and unfaithful to its progenitor. It's best fit for folks who have exhausted all the other English Tales games and really need to scratch that itch. It creates a bad demographic clash with itself in that way - it angers fans of the first but won't really change the mind of anyone who disliked ToX1. Tales of Xillia 2 is decently well-liked, but I feel like it's tough to recommend to anyone who didn't ABSOLUTELY LOVE Tales of Xillia while at the same time pissing off exactly that crowd, because it takes some pretty massive shits on its story. Playing the game is a chore and everything about it feels almost like it was specifically designed to be annoying and terrible. There was one particular twist that was so baffling to me in that light. ![]() The story wanted me to care about new characters that I don't give a fuck about, literally at the expense of old characters at certain points. I remember dying once or twice to one boss that should have been pretty easy because the game decided that it wasn't important to give me access to a healer for my party, so I just didn't have that. Mandating which characters are in my party for most the the game was a bad idea. Heavily encouraging me to use the main character at the expense of the rest of the cast was a bad idea. Putting a silent protagonist into a Tales game, which is always at its best when the party is interacting with one another and shooting the shit, was a legendarily bad idea. ![]() It isn't just disappointing as a Tales game, it's legitimately a bad game. It's kinda nice to see someone else agree with me on this. ![]()
